‘Jonas’ surprisingly funny, likable

I dreaded the premiere of “Jonas,” the new sitcom churned out by the Disney Channel machine to siphon more of my parental dollars. It comes on the heels of “Hannah Montana,” and it stars the wildly popular, Disney-launched, brother trio the Jonas Brothers.

On the show, they are the Lucas brothers, a pop trio that attends high school, even though, in reality, one is 19 and another is in his early 20s.

No matter. It was a big event in my household, which is ruled by two Jonas-nutty daughters, ages 5 and 9. As they watched, I plopped down at the kitchen table to pay some bills and utter snarky comments.

But something funny happened on the way to hating “Jonas.”

A lot of funny things, actually. The show is gentle, well written and irreverent. The Jonas boys are subtle, funny and very likable as TV brothers. They do not strike exaggerated rock star poses (as they do on stage), and the jokes come at their expense.

There is no laugh track. There are no winks after pratfalls. The show often plays as a parody on music videos. One musical interlude in the premiere has the band singing and strolling through the school hallways following an angelic crush; the oblivious girl walks bathed in heavenly light but keeps wreaking havoc on the other students with her bulky angel wings. It reminded me of the subtle calamity of vintage Peter Sellers.

Good stuff. Seriously.

“Jonas” airs at 8 p.m. Saturdays (with repeats throughout the week) on Disney Channel.

Are the Jonas Brothers poised to take the place of the Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana”? It’s too soon to tell.

A solid 4 million viewers watched the premiere of the network’s new series, “Jonas,” which topped kids and tween rankings Saturday. But the show didn’t come close to delivering the audience watching new episodes of “Hannah Montana.”

A Disney Channel news release boasted that the “Monkees”-style comedy starring the pop trio edged out the competition — Nickelodeon’s “Fairly OddParents: Wishology, Part 2,” the second night of Nick’s three-part original movie — in the kids 6 to 11 and tweens 9 to 14 categories.

“Jonas” drew 1.6 million in both kids and tweens, giving the network its best numbers in the time period in the past eight months, according to figures from Nielsen Media Research.

So the Jonas Brothers are big.

But can they be Miley Cyrus big, dominating the realms of music, film and TV? It doesn’t look good so far.

Their recent film “Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience” did not cross the $20 million mark at the box office, while “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” grossed $65 million. (”The Hannah Montana Movie,” in theaters now, has already grossed more than $70 million.)

And here’s a sobering fact: “Jonas” is Disney Channel’s lowest-rated live-action series premiere among ages 6 to 11 since 2005’s “Life With Derek.”

The show’s debut numbers fall far behind those for a recent new episode of “Hannah Montana,” which scored 4.8 million viewers on April 19. “Jonas” also drew fewer overall viewers (4 million vs. 4.1 million) and kids (1.6 million vs. 1.8 million) than the February premiere of Disney’s other new series, “Sonny With a Chance.”

“Jonas” was the Disney Channel’s first Saturday premiere for a series, part of a strategy to open up the night to original programming.

Keeping “JONAS” Styling On and Off Camera

It takes a cast and crew of hundreds to bring a new TV show to life ? the actors, the camera crew, the director, the … stylists? That might not be the first behind-the-scenes job we think of, but it’s an important one ? especially when the show in question is called “JONAS.”

Having just debuted Saturday, May 2, on Disney Channel, “JONAS” is a fun version of life in the music biz. Music sensations the Jonas brothers ? Joe, Nick, and Kevin ? play ordinary teenagers that is, when they aren’t onstage as rock superstars! Although their characters are fictitious, it’s a storyline with obvious parallels to the real lives of the Jonas brothers themselves, and that includes a dose of rock-star style, provided on the show by the character Stella Malone (played by Chelsea Staub) and behind the scenes by their real-life stylist, Michelle Tomaszewski.

We talked to both Chelsea and Michelle to see what to expect from the show … and the fashions. Michelle explains that “On the show, everything you see Chelsea holding for the boys’ characters, I gave input on choosing those clothes.” She’s been perfecting the Jonas’ look for two-and-a-half years now, with plenty of feedback from the guys themselves. “It’s a group effort, we work together. They come up with ideas, and I’m here to make their dreams come true. It’s important as a stylist that you and your client come up with ideas together, because that makes it special and unique ? it’s about their personality, and they wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear them!”

Getting that “special and unique” look, she explains, involves mixing designer and vintage clothes, plus some pieces that are created especially for the guys. Then everything is tailored to give it the perfect fit ? literally made for the Jonas brothers.

So, when we see Stella styling the guys on-screen, are we getting a look at the real thing? Michelle says we are ? in part, “You see part of the process, but styling is such a long process, between preproduction, postproduction, and shooting, it’s just nonstop ? it’s long hours and coming up with ideas and new designers. It’s a show in itself!” In fact, Michelle had to provide about nine changes of clothing per episode for each brother ? that’s 27 complete outfits ? so needles were flying backstage.

Chelsea says she looked to the real stylists on the set for guidance ? both in her role and her own offstage look. “Michelle is incredible! She’s always had the coolest ideas and the coolest clothes. I love Michelle, and I would go to her for my personal fashion tips. There were several events where we were all getting ready on set to head to different red carpets, and I’d run upstairs and ask ‘Do you like this? What earrings go with this?’ I also have my own wardrobe stylist on the show, and that’s who I asked the most ’stylist questions.’”

She laughs, “I sew on the show ? I constantly have a needle and thread and measuring tape ? so I was constantly asking the stylist and my mom ‘How do I measure this?’ or ‘What’s an inseam?’ How do I look like I know what I’m doing? I’m a creative person, but I’m not a patient person, so sewing is probably not for me.”

Although she may never be a seamstress like Stella, Chelsea thinks she and her character do have some things in common. “Stella’s the only girl who’s not affected by their fame ? she doesn’t care how many girls love them, they still have to remember her birthday! She gives them girl advice and they really trust her. And when I first met the Jonas brothers, two years ago, when we first filmed the pilot, it was before they really took off. So I got to meet them before the craziness and get to know them as normal teenage guys that I wasn’t shy around.”

One of Stella’s greatest contributions as a friend is helping the brothers “keep it real” by reminding them not to get too starstruck ? but, Chelsea says, that’s one job no one needs to do in real life. “I don’t think I bring them back down to Earth, because they’re already there!” she says. “They’re some of the hardest-working teenagers I’ve ever met, and they already have two feet on the ground.”

Chelsea and Michelle agree that the Jonas brothers are amazing colleagues. “They’re great people to work with,” Michelle tells us, and Chelsea adds, “They are the most amazing guys on the planet. I didn’t mind getting up at five in the morning when I get to hang out with them.”

So when you grab the popcorn and sit down to watch “JONAS,” keep an eye on the fashions ? and the fun. From Stella’s tape-measure technique to the perfect cut of Joe’s school blazer, a lot of offscreen effort went in to making “JONAS” look effortlessly awesome. “JONAS” airs every Saturday at 8PM/7c on Disney Channel.

Music Group’s Comedy Series Averages 4 Million Viewers, ToppingNick’s ‘Parents’ Movie Head-To-Head
Musical group the Jonas Brothers made their Nielsen mark with their new comedy series on Disney Channel Saturday night.

Jonas debuted on the Disney Channel before 4 million viewers on average at 8 p.m. on Saturday May 2, including 1.6 million tween viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.
The premiere, which squared off and topped the second installment of a three-part debut of the Fairly OddParents movie on Nickelodeon in several key measures, matched the most recent Disney Channel live-action original series bow, Sonny With a Chance on Feb. 8, relative to viewers. Jonas also topped Sonny, which faced Nickelodeon encores, by 7% among tween viewers (1.6 million versus 1.5 million).
Going head-to-head with Nick’s Fairly OddParents: Wishology, Part 2 on Saturday night, Jonas took the 8 p.m. half hour, across many demos. Among total viewers, Jonas enjoyed an 11% edge among average viewers (4 million to 3.6 million) and 45% among tweens 9 to 14 (1.6 million to 1.1 million). Among girls 6 to 11, Jonas held a 112% advantage (1.2 million versus 566,000) over Wishology 2 and was ahead 276% among tween girls (1.2 million to 319,000).
For their part, Nickelodeon officials were able to shout about a victory for Wishology, Part 2 in the head-to-head half hour among kids 2 to 11 — a 6.0 rating and 2.1 million of those watchers, versus a 5.7 and 2 million of that demo for Jonas. Among the 6-to-11 set, Nick notched a 7.0 rating and 1.5 million viewers, while Disney Channel averaged a 7.7 rating and 1.6 million of those watchers, according to Nielsen data.

In the 8:30 p.m. half-hour, Wishology, Part 2 scored a 6.3 rating and 2.2 million kids 2 to 11, compared with a new installment of the Wizards of Waverly Place for Disney, which conjured a 5.0 rating and 1.7 million of those viewers. Among kids 6 to 11, Wishology 2 posted a 7.3 rating against the demo, translating into 1.6 million of those watchers, versus a 6.7 rating and 1.4 million for Disney Channel’s Wizards.

Among Disney Channel recent live-action premieres, Jonas topped Sonny With a Chance among tweens, with a 7.5 average to a 7.2 mark. However, both of those shows lagged the Sept. 20, 2008 debut of the Suite Life on Deck and the Oct. 12, 2007 bow of Wizards, which averaged 11.4 and 11.7 marks against the tween demo, respectively.

‘Jonas’ Ratings: Girls Outnumber Boys Three-to-One

The Jonas brothers’ new sitcom premiered on the Disney Channel Saturday, providing another intriguing reminder that there’s riches in niches — in this case, girls age 9 to 14.

Jonas Disney noted that the show delivered 1.6 million viewers in that age group, known as “tweens,” and a respectable 4 million overall. (By the way, any adults watching the program without a child present should be immediately placed on a watch list.)

The more interesting statistic, though, is that 75% of those tweens were girls, meaning they outnumbered boys three to one. The percentage was exactly the same among the younger demographic breakdown of kids age 6-11.

So while Cartoon Network has made solid in-roads with boys thanks to “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” and other competitors — including off-shoot channels like Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons and Disney XD — join an increasingly crowded scrum for boys, girls remain an extremely lucrative niche, especially if their “Jonas” viewing yields the expected appetite for Jonas brothers music and merchandise.

What’s perhaps most interesting is that these various kid-oriented cable networks are going after each other in take-no-prisoners fashion, recognizing that they’re pursuing a finite children’s market that the major networks have essentially abdicated to them.

Tweens, in fact, represent just how heated the battle has become, inasmuch as it’s a relatively new demographic segment, minted by Disney to differentiate itself from younger-skewing rivals. Once you start splitting up the pie among preschoolers (age 2-5) and kids (either 2-11 or 6-11) and tweens (9-14), the spinning is enough to make your head spin.

Cutting through that haze, it seems fair to say that the Jonas trio has gotten off to a reasonably promising start in their ongoing quest to sing for their supper — and in the process to separate your female children from their allowances.

The Jonas Brothers have set the tween scene aflutter with their pop odes, and now the trio is taking on TV with a new Disney Channel series that premiered on Saturday.

JONAS (Saturdays, 8 pm/ET) is the story of the Lucas brothers (played by Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas), who live in a converted firehouse with their folks, attend high school and perform in a popular rock group called, oddly, JONAS. Little brother Frankie Lucas is played by “Bonus Jonas” Frankie.

Critics are comparing the lighthearted comedy to the Emmy-winning 1960s musical series The Monkees, which also centers on the lives of the members of a pop-rock group.

The Morning After: Got a Love Jonas

I didn’t manage to review Disney Channel’s new star-vehicle sitcom JONAS, but really, isn’t the best time to review a review-proof TV show after it airs?

In this new tween sitcom with music, Disney pop stars Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas play teenagers Kevin, Joe and Nick Lucas. They have a different last name in the series, because this is acting. The name of the series is still JONAS, because the Lucases live in a loft-like high-tech house on Jonas Street somewhere in New Jersey. And the Jonases are still musicians, because, come on.

In the first episode, Kevin and Joe provide comic relief as most of the action focuses on Nick, who writes a song for a singer-songwriter girl he has a crush on—he always falls too hard! it’s so sweet!—but falls victim to a misunderstanding when she plays the song in a concert… for her boyfriend. Nick, we are told, is “the serious one,” a description which helps somewhat to paper over the fact that he can’t display much convincing emotion when not singing.

The singing is a high point—the Jonases actually record some pretty hook-y pop music, and each episode of the sitcom features a music video. (The first one was easily the funniest moment of the show, featuring Nick’s love interest as an angel, outfitted with a pair of giant wings with which she kept knocking things over during her fantasy sequence, including a table of wares belonging to the “Vase Club.” It’s like a Flight of the Conchords Jr. video.)

Beyond that, there isn’t much in the series so far that will surprise viewers of Disney Channel sitcoms: there’s a fantasy setup (the Lucases’ high-tech pad includes a built-in computer the guys use to pick clothes), wacky friends (an eccentric fashion-designer girl) and the standard looks-like-a-TV-set-high-school high-school-TV-set. But the Jonases do bring a lackadaisical charm to the whole thing, and while there is a subplot involving a stalkerish fan who wants to rip the boys’ clothes off, no one gets hot white foam sprayed all over them. Any Jonas fans—or their parents / older siblings / teachers—in Tuned Inland?

Jonas Brothers Look Bigger on Small Screen

Another opening weekend for the Jonas Brothers. An altogether different result.

Jonas, the band’s new Disney Channel comedy, premiered before a solid 4 million viewers Saturday, the network reported today.

The tween-idol act’s show ruled as the night’s No. 1 TV show among, yes, tweens, girls, kids and, presumably, tweens, girls and kids who are totally into Joe, Nick and Kevin.

In head-to-head competition with its chief cable competition, Jonas outdrew the second part of the Fairly OddParents special, Wishology (3.6 million for the 8 p.m. half-hour).

The results, while not record-shattering, nor even necessarily iCarly-toppling, mark a turnaround from March, when the Jonas Brothers’ big-screen concert movie opened well, for a concert movie, but whiffed at the expectations game.

Jonas Brothers to Have Disney Channel Sitcom

The Jonas Brothers will star in a musical sitcom on the Disney Channel.

The ever-popular boy band of the millennial has done it again. They’ve charmed listeners with their chart topping hits, and even went 3D for a concert movie; now they will be starring in their own sitcom on the Disney Channel.

The show, Jonas, features Nick, Kevin and Joe, who go by their own names, as high school rock stars with a band named Jonas, but their last name isn’t Jonas – it’s Lucas.

Tweens everywhere should set their TiVo or DVR now because Jonas debuts on Friday night. The “Lucas” brothers are loosely based on Nick, Kevin and Joe’s own lives, especially the debut episode. The story line focuses around the youngest of the three, Nick, as a “lovelorn Romeo, the littlest bro who falls in love too often,” according to E! Online. The realism in this plot? Nick’s relationships with Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.

New York Daily News reports that the show is very clean cut, catering to the plethora of young fans that adore the Jonas Brothers. Any problems the boys encounter are always easy to fix and never leave a mark. There is no swearing, out of the ordinary clothing, or disrespect to elders. With the audience that both the JoBros and Disney sitcoms attract, clean is the only way to go. These boys couldn’t be bad even if they tried.

Jonas Brothers’ new TV series will probably be the kids’ choice

Watch out, Miley Cyrus! The Jonas Brothers’ new TV series “Jonas” is about to cause more trouble for “Hannah Montana” at the Kids’ Choice Awards and elsewhere in kudosland.

As the L.A. Times review notes, the Jonas Brothers’ show “feels long in coming” and it looks like a “classic high school comedy” quite similar to “Hannah Montana,” considering it “stars stars who play stars.” That’s because Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas portray the Lucases, fictional “rock and roll superstar brothers as they try to live ordinary lives,” according to the Disney Channel’s description.

The series has some detractors like the snooty New York Times, which predictably dismisses “Jonas” as a “noxious, awkward mix of art, commerce and romance,” but that won’t hurt its kid appeal. In fact, when it comes to the Kids’ Choice Awards, “Jonas” is just the kind of show voters adore.

In 2008, “Hannah Montana” lost the award for favorite TV show to “Drake & Josh,” which also won in 2006 — another series starring dimple-cheeked brothers (well, step-brothers, actually). “Hannah Montana” has never won that category and, considering it will compete next year against “Jonas,” doesn’t — let’s face it — have much hope of victory ahead.

The Jonas Brothers play semi-catchy, over-produced pop songs about young love and are one of Disney’s hottest properties. Now, they have a semi-catchy, over-produced Disney Channel show about the problems any superstar sibling boy group face when forced to interact with regular society. It’s not as anarchic as The Monkees or brilliant as Flight of the Conchords, but at least it’s better than the other recycled garbage on Disney. A hearty endorsement, indeed.

For readers who were recently released from Guantanamo or lack tween cousins, here’s a quick primer on the Jonas Brothers phenomenon. Joe is the hot, swarthy lead singer, Nick is the serious, slightly-less-hot multi-instrumentalist who writes all the songs, and Kevin is the eldest and the one tweenage girls would have the best chance of scoring with, if he and his brothers would just take off their purity rings. On JONAS - their last name has become an all-caps mass noun - they play a version of themselves, only their last name is Lucas, and their band on the show is called Jonas. But confusing naming schemes are of little importance when you live in a tricked-out firehouse and spend all of your time at school in a glass-enclosed courtyard.

Nick is the focus of the first episode, writing a romantic song for a girl who already has a boyfriend. Some version of that plot will probably always be present, as the Jonas trio looks more comfortable singing or talking about music than delivering their lines. Joe and Kevin flutter around the edge of Nick’s problems, underplaying various broad gags (fake mustaches, a monocle take) and dictating lines ripped from an 11-year-old’s conceptions of love: “Nick, you always fall too hard, too fast.” But those moments where JONAS superficially acknowledges the youth image machine that makes Disney millions of dollars are actually the best parts of the show, and it might be worth checking back in on Saturday nights to see how meta they can go.

This wouldn’t be the Disney Channel without something shrill and obnoxious pretty much ruining the soup. That’s the B-plot, consisting of personal stylist Stella (Chelsea Staub) working on new rip-away outfits for the boys with psycho Jonas super-fan Macy (Nicole Gale Anderson). Maybe they are trying to parody real-life rabid tween fans, but that joke’s been old since A Hard Day’s Night.

As we learned in Camp Rock, the last acting gig for the JoBros, Joe (or Joe’s bangs) can pass for sensitive and misunderstood, so maybe he doesn’t have to say his lines so flatly in future episodes. The semi-single camera directing and at-times muted lighting are a welcome change of pace from the other Disney Channel shows that look and feel like the worst episodes of Saved by the Bell.

Perusing a few of the early negative reviews of JONAS, it seems like many critics do not watch the other programming on the Disney Channel. The other tween idol vehicles - - Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, Sonny With a Chance — contain writing so unoriginal and laugh tracks so loud that it’s hard to discern what is happening between all the histrionic acting and punch lines that couldn’t jab their way out of an officially-licensed Hannah Montana pencil case. JONAS is less annoying, has no laugh track, and is now the best part of Disney Channel’s line-up, which is like saying that Italy was the best part of World War II’s Axis powers. Yeah, it’s not that good, but the alternatives (Miley Cyrus/Selena Gomez/Demi Lovato) are much more frightening.

Nicole Anderson Interview - JJJ Exclusive!

JJJ recently caught up with the 18-year-old actress and chatted about the series, the JoBros‘ tunes and becoming a princess. Check it out:

JJJ: What is your favorite JONAS episode that you filmed so far?

NA: My favorite is probably the one where Chelsea [Staub] and I had all our scenes together. It’s me teaching [her character] Stella how to play sports so she can pass P.E. and not have to take it for summer school. It was a lot of fun because in that episode, I got to do some gymnastics, which I did for 10 years. Chelsea and I had a lot of fun doing all of our scenes and she had a lot of funny stuff.

JJJ: What is the best thing about your character, Macy Misa?

NA: She’s such a big goofball. I love playing her because she’s always getting herself in these situations and saying things she probably regrets later. She’s a big ball of fun and I love playing her.

JJJ: Macy is the self-proclaimed number one fan of Jonas. Are you a fanatic over anything else?

NA: Probably the number one fan of Reese Witherspoon! I’ve always followed her work and when I moved out to L.A., I studied all of her work from the very beginning. She has inspired me throughout my acting.

JJJ: You have experience in gymnastics. Did you compete?

NA: I did compete the whole time I was in gymnastics. I went to nationals.

JJJ: What is the toughest gymnastics trick that you can do?

NA: I can’t do it anymore (laughs) but the toughest thing that I did do was probably a front tuck on the beam because it was a blind landing.

JJJ: You just received your first fanbook. How excited were you to flip through it?

NA: It was really sweet. I thought it was really cool that they took the time to do that for me. The show hasn’t even aired yet and I’m already getting cool fans who are really excited to see my character. I wasn’t expecting for things to happen this fast or anything, but yea, it was kind of like ‘Oh wow!’ It was really nice. I definitely wasn’t expecting it.

JJJ: Do you listen to the Jonas Brothers’ music? What is your favorite song?

NA: I really like “Love Bug.” I went to one of their shows at the Palladium not too long ago. I’d never been to any of their concerts before that. It was a smaller venue, so it was cool to finally see them play.

JJJ: What is your favorite thing about the JoBros?

NA: They’re just so entertaining. Whether it’s just joking around or making conversations. They’re great musicians and great actors. They really live up to their hype.

JJJ: You also starred in ABC Family’s Princess as Jitterbug/Calliope. What was the movie about?

NA: Princess was about a modern day Princess who has this magical power to communicate with these mythological creatures. She’s like their healer and during her 25th birthday, she’ll lose that power and she has to find the new princess to take on her position. She was looking for my character [Jitterbug/Calliope] so I can become the new princess and continue on healing these creatures who will die out. There were dragons and fairies and Big Foot. There were a lot of really cool graphics in the movie. The best part of filming that was we actually filmed in a real castle in Toronto. It was a real castle called Casa Loma. The guy built it for his wife back in the early 1900s. It was really cool.

JJJ: Do you have any favorite books?

NA: I love “The Other Boleyn Girl.” Anything that has to do with the Tudor generation. I’m obsessed with The Tudors. I even watch The Tudors on HBO.

JJJ: Do you have any new projects coming up besides JONAS?

NA: Nothing as of yet. I’m still auditioning, still trying to book something. But nothing as of yet. There are a couple I’ve come close to but nothing for sure.

JJJ: What was the last CD you bought?

NA: Oh gosh. I don’t buy CDs…I buy a lot of songs on iTunes. I usually don’t buy full CDs. The last song that I bought on iTunes was…actually, I bought the new Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs CD. I can’t remember going into a store and purchasing a CD.

JONAS PREMIERES TONIGHT ONTHE DISNEY CHANNEL

Hey everyone!

It is hard to believe but it is FINALLY HERE.

JONAS premieres tonight on the DISNEY CHANNEL in the US. Later it will be making its way around the world.

We are excited for you to see the first episode. We wrote all the songs for the show. The first one is called, GIVE LOVE A TRY. The episode is called THE WRONG SONG.

Next week is another special episode - the first one with our little brother Frankie.

We worked hard over the last 8 months to make it an exciting show. There are so many talented people in the cast and crew. We really wanted to say thank you to everyone.

Hey, Hey It’s the Jonases, in a New Disney Series: Review: The Jonas Brothers’ New TV Series is Cute and Owes a Debt to Monkees Mania.

May 2–Advance word on Jonas, the Jonas Brothers’ new Disney Channel comedy series, has compared it to The Monkees, which seems like an odd selling point unless you’re trying to reach the parents (and, sigh, grandparents) of the JoBros’ target audience.

A better reference point is Hannah Montana, because Jonas is like an inverted version of that show. If Hannah is about an “ordinary” teen girl leading a secret double life as a rock star, then Jonas is about rock stars leading an open double life as “ordinary” teens.

“Ordinary” is a relative term, of course, and the show acknowledges that Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas (OK, their characters’ last name is Lucas, but is that kidding anyone?) do have a rock-star side. They live in a fabulous converted firehouse with such doodads as a computerized wardrobe selector, a recording studio and a very Monkees-style fire pole to slide down; even the lockers at their high school have benefited from an art-director’s touch.

But they’re regular guys, prone to crushes just like any teen (the premiere’s plot involves Nick — the “serious” one — losing his heart to a fellow songwriter at school, and he’s prone to falling for girls a lot) and surrounded by wacky friends, including Stella (Chelsea Staub), a fashionista who’s always trying to find ways for the brothers to dodge obsessive fans, and Macy (Nicole Anderson), Stella’s best friend — and the brothers’ most obsessive fan.

The show is cute, and whether you think of that adjective as high compliment or faint praise is probably a pretty good barometer of how much you’ll enjoy it.

The Jonases are appealing, and have a good sense of comic timing and an ingratiating sense of humor about themselves and the music biz (the funniest bit in the premiere is a music video that mocks “teen angel” cliches even as it portrays an earnest love ballad).

Disney made only one episode available for review, so it remains to be seen how much Kevin’s and Joe’s characters will be developed beyond the premiere, where they’re a combo of supportive brothers and wisecracking sidekicks (most people who’ve had a brother know that supportive and wisecracking come hand in hand).

The premiere includes a brief, amusing cameo by John Ducey as the brothers’ dad, but the show has yet to introduce the brothers’ mom or their little brother, who will be played by Frankie Jonas, the Jonas’ real-life little brother. The Jonases told TV critics in January that Frankie is the scene-stealer, and if they’re on target, that should give an already likable show some extra juice.

The way things usually work with Disney, the music career is erected on the back of the TV one, and the Jonases, already multiplatinum millionaire pop stars with a Rolling Stone cover in their pocket, would normally be in their third sitcom season by now.

As brought to term, “Jonas” is a classic high school comedy (with musical interludes), and, like fellow Disney teencoms “Hannah Montana” and “Sonny With a Chance” (featuring “Camp Rock” co-star Demi Lovato), it stars stars who play stars.

To ensure that no one mistakes this for a documentary, the Jonases have become the Lucases — Jonas is now merely the name of their band. For balance, they’ve been given two comical female friends with whom there is no question of romance, one (Chelsea Staub as Stella) their teenage wardrobe mistress, and the other (Nicole Anderson as Macy) a full-time fan whose love for all Jonases/Lucases precludes her falling for any particular one.

There’s nothing to complain about here, and much to like. Some may find the brothers’ music a little too perfectly coiffed, a little too automatically urgent. But they are less manufactured than many young pop sensations and have absorbed the moves of generations of rock elders, which they recycle with enthusiasm.

The pop sounds notwithstanding, “Jonas” is less hysterical, in the behavioral sense, than most teen series, its tone whimsical and gently surreal. That the show — whose various directors include Savage Steve Holland, of the great “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide” and Roger S.H. Schulman, from “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose” — is shot single-camera gives it a little extra weight. And if, like the Jonases’ music, it doesn’t exactly break new ground, it covers the old ground with assurance.

In the past year the Jonas Brothers, three charming, talented, aggressively hairstyled, purity-ring-wearing brothers from northern New Jersey, transformed from a middling tween-focused band into perhaps the most significant pop juggernaut since ’N Sync.

They had a hit album and tour, experienced public romances and breakups and, in an unanticipated twist, earned some respect. They played — a bit awkwardly — with Stevie Wonder at the Grammy Awards. Rolling Stone magazine coordinated a surprisingly lively conversation between Nick Jonas, the band’s main songwriter, and one of his idols, Elvis Costello.

But “Jonas,” the brothers’ new Disney Channel sitcom, which begins Saturday, is a calculated, perhaps fearful step backward, a reclamation of innocence. Here Kevin, 21, Joe, 19, and Nick, 16, play the Lucas brothers, pop stars in retreat, trying to maintain normal lives at high school while fame rages just outside the door.

And yet there’s little innocent about “Jonas,” a blithe, thinly drawn, thus far unfunny show seeded with profound cynicism befitting a much older band. Nick chases a girl, Penny (Bridgit Mendler), a winsome blonde with a purple guitar who wants him only for his songwriting. And Stella (Chelsea Staub), the band’s schoolmate and fashion designer, spends Saturday’s episode designing tear-away Velcro clothing, a more economically efficient response to rabid shirt-grabbing fans. The show does neatly capture the many denizens of the rock star ecosystem. Here’s Stella, the loyalist who styles the band, chatting with Macy (Nicole Anderson), a twitching, zealous fan-droid who shrieks on command:

“What do you do,” Stella asks Macy, “just follow them around all day?”

Replies Macy, indignantly, “No, of course not!” And then, with a tragicomic exhale and hopeful fluttering eyelashes, “Why, do they see me?”

In the band’s music life, Nick gives off the savviest air, so it’s disappointing to see him here reduced to playing a dullard, a romantic incompetent resigned to life in the bubble. “Read the fan magazines,” he says to Penny. “I’m the serious one!” Or, as Macy describes him: “All that intensity!”

Because this premiere episode centers on Nick, Joe and Kevin have more room for tomfoolery, and it’s welcome. The show’s most credible moments come when the two oldest brothers needle the youngest about his crush; that sort of kid behavior never ages. But Nick has the air of an adult squeezed into children’s clothing and behavior — a glum, frustrated pop star playing a glum, frustrated pop star. Maybe he has never watched “The Monkees.”

The stench of obligation is overwhelming, except around Kevin, the least essential band member, but here on equal footing. In “Camp Rock,” last year’s Disney Channel hit movie, which starred the brothers, Joe was the lead, a bratty pop star in need of reform, a clever tweak to the group’s angelic image. In the initial, scrapped version for this show, the Jonas Brothers led double lives as spies, which, while a mockable conceit, at least was a conceit.

That this show lacks any such twist is less forgivable given that it’s not the Disney Channel’s first foray into the double consciousness of teen-pop fame. “Hannah Montana,” the Miley Cyrus vehicle, is about a pop star who leads a dual life. But while Ms. Cyrus grew up in, and through, “Hannah Montana,” the Jonas Brothers are already famous well beyond tweens. Their audience is wider and smarter and probably expects more than this noxious, awkward mix of art, commerce and romance.

“Are you saying the song’s available?” Nick asks Penny about the song he wrote for her, which she unsuccessfully used to woo another boy.

“It’s completely unattached,” she replies.

In that case, Nick proposes, “I think we have a demo to record.” All that intensity. Sigh.

Chelsea Staub blows kisses to the camera as she takes a ride around town with costar Kevin Jonas.

The 20-year-old actress caught up with JJJ to chat about JONAS, the JoBros and a crazy-manic fish named Bea. Check it out:

JJJ: What is your favorite thing about the Jonas Brothers?

CS: It’s pretty cool that I get to go to work with three guys my age who don’t suck to look at (laughs). They’re cute and they’re fun and we have a great time together. They love to make people laugh and make them feel comfortable. It’s really nice to be able to go to work and know that I’m doing my job and doing what I love. I’m there with peers and people that I can relate to because we’re all close to the same age. It’s awesome.

JJJ: Out of the episodes that you’ve filmed, do you have a favorite episode?

CS: 21 episodes in the can ready to go. It’s different because most shows will start airing what they filmed half way through filming [the season]; start putting it out there and start getting a response, but we finished a whole season and no one has seen any of it yet. Hopefully they like it!

There are a bunch that are my favorite. We had such a great time making the show. In one episode, my character Stella enters a beauty pageant. The boys are judging the contest and Joe tells Stella that she’s not the “pageant type.” Those are fighting words for a girl. She ends up finding a way into the pageant to compete while the boys are judging her. It’s really funny and of course, it was a great episode. I had a great time with it.

JJJ: What’s your favorite thing about your character, Stella Malone?

CS: My favorite part of Stella is that she’s the only girl not affected by how famous the Jonas/Lucas Brothers have become. She’s grown up with these boys. They actually make a reference back to knowing each other since they were five years old. She doesn’t care that they’re famous — they’re her best friends so she picks on them, gives them girl advice and they rough house with each other. They’re best friends. And she’s completely honest all the time, probably to a fault.

JJJ: Do you personally listen to the Jonas Brothers’ music? What’s your favorite song?

CS: Oh yes, I definitely listen to their music. My favorite…from the first album was “Inseparable.” And the second album, probably “Love Bug.” When I first met the Jonas Brothers, it was auditioning for the pilot episode two years ago and I remember that they had a Baby Bottle Pop commercial to their name and Year 3000 was on the radio and they hadn’t even released their first album, gone on tour with Miley [Cyrus] or any big tours for that matter. They didn’t have that Rolling Stone cover, obviously. So, when I first met them, I remember when we were filming, we actually sat in the green room one day and they played “S.O.S.” on their computer for me, saying, ‘We’re gonna release this as our first single.’ I loved it. The first concert I went to was in Arizona at the Marquee. There were maybe 200 girls there. I bought my ticket at the door the day of the show. To watch their climb and see how popular their music has become…I bought their first album in Salt Lake City, Utah, while I was filming Minutemen and I remember playing it for the cast. I remember saying, ‘These guys are going to be huge, I promise you.’ Now they’re everywhere and it’s really cool. When I first got the show, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m doing a show with the Jonas Brothers’ and people were like, ‘Oh, I’ll have to check them out.’ And now, I tell anyone, especially my little cousins that I’m doing a show with the Jonas Brothers and squeals ensue.

JJJ: How much fun is it working with your real life best friend, Nicole Anderson?

CS: It’s really cool. Nicole and I met each other five years ago in an acting class. We hit it off right away because we’re both the same age and we’re both in the same situation where we left our home states (hers being Georgia, mine Arizona) with our moms, living in a one-bedroom apartment pursuing our dream which was amazing but it’s hard too. We were missing friends and families, prom and high school. So, we really hit it off and it was nice to have someone going through the same things. About two years ago, we both auditioned for Stella. It came down to me, Nicole and Demi Lovato for the role of Stella. I booked it and I was so thrilled and it was also bittersweet because my friend lost out and that was hard feeling like you’re celebrating when you know your friend is hurting. Then a year ago, when we started filming the first season, the producers came to me and said that they really wanted to write in a best friend for Stella and they were thinking of casting Nicole. It was perfect. It was full circle and we were able to do the show together. Also, both starting out in the same acting class, going through auditions together to now seeing our names on the call sheet of a series as a regular character. It was cool to go through this experience together because we both know how much it means to us. We’ve had a lot of moments on set where we just stop and look at each other and go, ‘I can’t believe we did this. This is so awesome.’

JJJ: You took a trip to Paris for New Year’s. What was your best memory from the trip?

CS: I fell in love with Paris. It was so incredible, I don’t even have words. We were only there for five days, and we fit in so much. I don’t think we slept at all. I went with my two best girl friends, which was incredible. I read a quote a long time ago from Gwyneth Paltrow’s dad [Bruce Paltow] saying, ‘I want you to go to Paris for the first time with me, because I want to be with someone who will always love you and love you no matter what.’ That quote was what I went by when I went with my two girl friends. This was such a perfect city, I never want it ruined. So I went with people who I know I’m going to love forever. We walked around the city, we saw all the sights that we wanted to. Everything from the Eiffel Tower to Musee del’Orangerie and the Siene River. But my favorite moments, I think, were sitting in the little cafes and meeting the people. We managed to met a professional tennis team, I don’t know how. We ran across these guys who were speaking English, which was a relief for us because we don’t speak a lot of French. They had attended schools in the states and were back in France attending tournaments and we hit it off with them. They showed us parts of the city that we probably wouldn’t have seen because we weren’t locals. It was incredible. Everything from the food to the people to the sights. We had a blast. The coffee, the crepes. We stayed in this one hotel where the little guy who rant he front desk — his name was Jean-Oui — every night we would come back home and we’re three young girls who were trying to be frugal [save] with our money. Every night we would come back to the hotel and ask us if we’ve eaten, which most times we hadn’t. He’d go, ‘Wait, wait, wait…’ and he’d run across the street to the bakery and bring us about 10 hot croissants and a bottle of water. We didn’t ask him to do it, but every day he would bring us that to make sure we were fed and taking care of ourselves because he knew we were young girls who were traveling without our parents and probably not being responsible. He definitely kept us alive on that trip (laughs).

I had heard that the French people were rude and wouldn’t want us around because we were American, but I found it to be just the opposite. People were inviting us into their homes and wanting us to meet them for dinner and bringing us food. We spent New Year’s on the Champs-Élysées with 20,000 people and it was incredible.

JJJ: What city or country would you love to visit but haven’t had a chance to?

CS: I really want to go to Greece. I really want to spend some time in San Torini. Right now, my friends and I are trying to find a way to get there. My good friends, Carla and Roger; Carla is the girl I stayed with when I went to Argentina. I met them when they came for the DC Games. They both work for Disney Channel Mexico. They’re going to Greece this summer and have invited me to come with them so if I’m able to get away, I’d love it.

JJJ: You appeared in the FunnyorDie.com video with Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. How much fun was that to film?

CS: It was so much fun. It was really crazy too. I actually didn’t know what to expect. I’ve known Zac and Vanessa for a while. I got a phone call that they were having a pool party and maybe filming a little skit for FunnyOrDie.com, would I want to stop by? I was like, ‘Sure, I’ll stop by.’ I got over there and there was a whole crew set up and it’s Nicole Richie and Lance Bass. Queen Latifah walked by me and Carmen Electra was coming by and dancing with me. The whole time I was like, ‘How did this happen? Where did this come from?’ We had a great time making the video. It was a lot of fun.

JJJ: Are there any new projects that you’re working on?

CS: I’ve been working on a couple little things. I’ve been working on a new cartoon pilot for Disney. Hopefully, it will get picked up. It’s been fun, it’s my first time voicing a character so to watch my voice coming out of a fish is different. There are some other things that I’m working on and keeping my fingers crossed and seeing what happens with JONAS. It’s going to be an interesting month ahead of me.

So, three Jonas Brothers walk into a prep school.

Only they’re not the Jonas Brothers — they’re the Lucas Brothers! Who perform in the brother band JONAS! And the brothers crack corny jokes and break into song right there on campus! Hilarity ensues!

That’s more or less the premise of JONAS, a scripted Disney Channel series in which teen idols Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas play teen idols Nick, Joe and Kevin Lucas, who inexplicably call their band JONAS.

But at the school, whose mascot seems to be plaid clothing and accessories, the brothers just want to blend in — and, OK, also go to Kevin’s locker, where (what wackiness!) he’s stashed a blender that makes delicious fruit smoothies.

In the premiere episode, which airs at 7 tonight, Nick, the sensitive, serious and talented one, becomes smitten with Penny, a classmate who happens to be an aspiring singer. Much to the chagrin of his meddling brothers, Nick writes a plaintive puppy-love song for Penny. Only there’s a misunderstanding about what “for her” actually means. And stuff happens, including a series of sight gags during the centerpiece performance of the strummy song Give Love a Try.

If this sounds like your idea of must-see TV, then congratulations and happy belated 11th birthday, young lady.

It’s as if the JoBros are launching a TV series simply for the sake of launching a TV series.

Originally, JONAS was supposed to have been called J.O.N.A.S., an acronym for “Junior Operatives Networking As Spies.”

But somebody, somewhere along the way, decided otherwise. Did they find the idea too ambitious, given the handsome, wholesome siblings’ jampacked touring and recording schedules and, also, their limited acting abilities? Or did the Disney overlords just decide it would make more sense to do a show that stays true to the Jonas brand by being about the brothers Jonas, only not really?

Could be, then, that JONAS is just art imitating the half-life of fame.

As if there’s anything else on. Well, actually, there is (see below), but the big one this weekend is JONAS, Disney’s new series featuring the much-hyped, reasonably talented Jonas Brothers, premiering Saturday at 8 p.m.

And, as I expected, there are no problems on the family safety front. Family-friendly… Well, younger kids of both genders should get a kick out of it. Parents won’t wretch. But I strongly suspect that most boys older than, say, 10, will be rolling their eyes and gagging and in every which way showing their disdain. I suspect there will also be some teasing, which you may want to monitor in case it gets too mean-spirited.

The show, itself, features three brothers named Nick, Joe and Kevin, who live in a fire station on Jonas Ave. with their parents and younger brother. Now, we only see Dad in the premiere - and I was underwhelmed. Dad’s an idiot, trying to come off as being supportive of his son and telling really lame jokes, such as his wife being the 23rd love of his life, right after he walked past 22 other girls.

Otherwise, the show moves quickly. The writing is a little heavy-handed, we’re reminded repeatedly that Nick is the serious one. The band’s uber fan is almost grating (she also goes to the same school as the boys), on the other hand, the character does poke gentle fun at obsessed teens. And while the best you can say about the rest of the show is that it’s mildly amusing, that’s also about the worst you can say about it. It’s not great, but it’s not bad, either.

As for telling the guys apart, let your kids tell you. First off, it will demonstrate you taking interest in something they’re excited about, plus it will give them some good eye-rolling, we’re-separating-ourselves-appropriately-from-our-parental-units fun.

Finally, please note something that almost got lost in the wrestling match with my Internet connection this past week. Tonight starts a three-part “epic adventure” of The Fairly OddParents on Nickelodeon. The first hour of The Fairly OddParents: Wishology goes up tonight at 8 p.m., with the second hour on Saturday at 8 and the third on Sunday at 8.

According to the press notes, it’s a parody of just about every action adventure classic film out there and it guest stars Gene Simmons (you know, KISS), Brendan Fraser and Patrick Warburton. I also like The Fairly OddParents, which is an animated screwball comedy about Timmy, who has two fairy godparents for guardians or parents or something like that. So there is an alternative to cutesy teen rockers this weekend.

The Jonas Brothers are poised to be the next Disney TV tween sensations with their new series debut. But whether or not they can be as successful as Hannah Montana is still to be seen. Jennifer Collins reports.

Bill Radke: If you have a tween in your house, you’ll want to know that Disney has new designs on his or her allowance money. That band of singing siblings, the Jonas Brothers, will premiere their new sitcom tomorrow on the Disney Channel. Jennifer Collins reports this is not just a TV show, it’s a marketing Blitzkrieg.

Jennifer Collins: In the Jonas Brothers’ new show, Nick, Kevin and Joe are just regular guys with regular problems — that they sing about:

Jonas Bros. Song: I fell in love with the Pizza girl.

Disney’s banking on TV romances like that to drive real girls crazy. Which in turn will drive them to Jonas Brothers’ movies, concerts, and merchandise, and give Disney another teen money-making machine.

Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah Montanna, is still in the fold. But with High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron growing up, Disney needs to fill the pipeline.

Jason Squire is a film professor at the University of Southern California. He says Disney’s got the formula down.

Jason Squire: The smart people at Disney position the Jonas Brothers in a series of exposures on different platforms. Each platform represents a different layer of potential customers and revenue.

Customers like 11-year-old Kyla Giron. She’s got a Jo-Bros poster . . .

Kyla Giron: So like they signed it.

And one of her friends:

Kyla’s friend: Like she has like a whole outfit of them; like everything of them and like a head band with their faces on it.

But so far, the Jonas Brothers, are no Hannah Montana. Their movie — a 3-D concert — brought in $12 million in the opening weekend. That’s only a third of what the company was expecting, and way out of Hannah’s range.

Squire: Nobody really knows that there is going to be a devoted following of viewers on the Disney Channel to watch the Jonas Brothers.

Gasp! Eek! OMG! It’s the Jonas Brothers! On TV! Every week!!!!

“Jonas,” which premieres Saturday night on the Disney Channel, is unlikely to trigger a mass epidemic of fainting, but it gingerly polishes the squeaky clean image of the world’s most celebrated boy band, while giving the trio a chance to tap into their inner Monkees.

“We’re so blessed to do this because we know we are living so many people’s dreams,” said Kevin, the oldest brother at the ripe age of 21, in an interview earlier this year. “The atmosphere on set is so exciting because we know the scripts are going to be amazing and fun. We’re in the midst of one right now and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard in my life.”

Those tone-deaf to the Jonas’ hummable ditties and blind to their puppy-dog looks are unlikely to be converted by the sitcom, in which Kevin, Joe and Nick play pop stars struggling to lead a semi-normal life.

Saturday’s episode mixes in sight gags (Velcro pants stuck to a chair), potential catch phrases (”Boom goes the dynamite!”), romance (Nick falls for an angelic schoolmate whose face could sell Ivory soap) and inside, wink-wink jokes (Nick reminds his crush that the teen magazines have dubbed him the serious one). Throw in a couple of new musical numbers, and you have correctly followed the Disney formula: safe, stupid fun.

Executive producer Michael Curtis lets slip that the original concept had the group playing spies, but during the development process, the band got too big to imagine the boys as anything but thinly veiled versions of themselves.

It’s unfortunate that Curtis didn’t make a stronger attempt to buck reality.

Last year’s Disney movie “Camp Rock” proved that all three have acting chops, most notably Nick, who might even be capable of playing the kind of self-loathing characters that teenagers used to swoon over, back when James Dean was the epitome of cool.

But Disney’s Fantasyland has no tolerance for motorcycles and cigarettes. The most rebellious thing about “Jonas” is that the family resides in vamped-out digs with fire poles, a drum set hovering over Nick’s bed and an endless supply of fresh fruit.

Most of the first episode takes place at some sort of private school that appears to be devoid of teachers or even classrooms, as the students spend nearly all their time in the candy-colored hallways.

Of course, the show keeps coming back to the ultimate dream: the opportunity to share space with the Jonas Brothers. This desire is personified in the character of Macy Misa, a squealing, clothes-ripping classmate played to the hilt by Nicole Gale Anderson. As expected, the boys treat her stalker-like behavior with kid gloves. (The brothers come off as so pious that there doesn’t seem to be anything remotely creepy about a 21-year-old roaming the halls of a high school.)

Chelsea Staub, who plays another classmate, relayed a story that suggests the Jonases’ real-life antics are much more original and daring than anything the show might offer. One afternoon, after returning from a fitting, she discovered that everything in her dressing room - the clothes, the hangers, even the lightbulbs - was gone. A note telling her to immediately find the producers had her convinced that she was being fired.

“I walked on the stage shaking and terrified - and it turned out it was all in Joe’s bathroom,” she said. “They got me really good.”

It’s that kind of naughty mischief that might make the Jonases more appealing to the cynical masses, even if it means mussing up some heavenly hair.

In recent weeks I’ve been pondering, as I am wont to do: “Where have the Jonas Brothers been lately? Have they totally left the radar?” I know you’ve been thinking the same thing, too. At one point, Nick, Joe and Kevin seemed to be all over the place. They were on the Grammys! They had a 3-D concert movie! They were dealing with tabloid dating rumors! And then Miley Cyrus dominated the headlines, and we were sad about the lack of Jonaii presence in our lives. I am happy to tell you that they are back — and on a weekly basis. It’s crazy to think, but they haven’t had their very own Disney Channel show. Sure, they starred in the very popular “Camp Rock” film, but not a sitcom. In “Jonas,” (catchy, huh?), they play three brothers named Nick, Joe and Kevin (clever!) whose names are NOT the Jonas Brothers. No, on the show they are the Lucas Brothers who are studious during the day but rockers at night. In a twist, their band name is JONAS. But it is a reference to the name of the street their house is on: Jonas Street. (Confusing!) Well, at least they’re back in the picture. Saturday, 8 p.m. Disney

Stripped to its core, “Jonas,” the Disney Channel’s new sitcom starring the Jonas brothers, is an efficient delivery system to expand the singing trio’s exposure among barely pubescent girls, thus separating that prized demographic (and their parents) from hard-earned dollars. Those who do not swoon and emit piercing squeals at the sight of Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas will still find some amiable charm within this slick packaging, even if it’s nothing that couldn’t be mistaken for “The Monkees” four decades ago.

The series doesn’t really require the brothers to act much, essentially playing slightly tweaked versions of themselves while engaging in a lot of fraternal teasing. That said, they handle their limited chores deftly enough, and each episode will allow them to do what they do best — or are at least known for — namely, adding to their playlist.

The surrounding cast includes their dad/manager (a safely bland John Ducey); a perky gal pal (Chelsea Staub) determined to cash in on their professional popularity at school with grand ideas like tear-away Velcro sleeves; and Macy (Nicole Anderson), a wide-eyed fan/fellow classmate who positively swoons in any of the brothers’ presence. She is, of course, utterly adorable, providing a likable surrogate for those girls whose closest connection to Jonasville will come through a screen or crushing toward a stage.

In the premiere, serious-minded, dreamily intense Nick gets a crush on a girl (guest Bridgit Mendler), which prompts him to write her a song. His brothers join in singing this ditty with him (while she appears, mock musicvideo-like, in angel’s wings), even though they worry about Nick’s tendency to fall too hard, too fast in these situations.

Silliness ensues, from the brothers sliding down bat-poles into their studio (clever) to donning disguises so they can go to a club and watch her sing without disrupting things by attracting undue attention (not so clever).

Basically, “Jonas” reminds us that Disney can still work off the basic template of the Frankie and Annette movies, plugging in fresh talent — crooning slightly different pop tunes — to new generations of girls, whose mothers and grandmothers went through the same hormonal process with the Beatles and Elvis.

By that measure, the Jonas brothers are an inoffensive permutation on the theme, and — unlike plenty of tween-oriented fare — no reason for adults to adopt their own chastity pledge, as the Jonases have famously done. Indeed, watching the show might provide inspiration to immediately try breeding a trio of telegenic boys, if only to establish a nest egg for one’s old age.

Meet My New Friend Nicole Anderson from Disney’s “Jonas”
Earlier this week I went to the Buzznet offices to meet and interview Nicole Anderson, one of the stars of the new “Jonas” show on the Disney Channel.

She couldn’t have been sweeter and we had a lot in common, from our dogs to our favorite movies.

Chelsea Staub smiles in the hot seat, ready to take over Radio Disney on Wednesday afternoon (April 29) in Burbank, Calif.

The 20-year-old JONAS leading lady answered a few questions for JJJ while she was there and dished on her celebrity doppelgangers, fresh breath and going to Greece. Check it out:

On people confusing her with Meaghan Martin and Tiffany Thornton: “We get confused all the time! I think it started, when I first met Tiffany she had just been filming Hatching Pete in Salt Lake City, Utah where I had filmed Minutemen. A bunch of kids had approached her in a bowling alley and were like, ‘Oh! We loved you in Minutemen!’ The funniest time though was when were on the red carpet for the Jonas 3D movie premiere and I was standing right next to her. This woman comes up to interview Tiffany and asks her, ‘So what’s it like working with the Jonas Brothers?’ Tiffany was like, ‘I personally, have no idea. Maybe you should ask her.’”

On one thing she can’s travel without: “My I.D. (laughs). Probably, a toothbrush. I love fresh breath and brushing my teeth.

On Bea, the animated fish she’s voicing in an upcoming series: “Yes! I’m voicing a manic, crazy, emotionally unstable fish named Bea. She is a teenage fish that just wants to get out of the tank. It’s a lot of fun. It’s the first time I’ve ever voiced a character or heard myself coming out of this little, multi-colored thing with fins.”

On a possible vacation in Greece: “Still planning to go to Greece, yes. I’m planning to go with a friend of mine from here and with Carla and Roger from the Disney Channel Games. It would be awesome if we could pull it off.”

All the conditions are right for a breakout Disney show starring a trio of dangerously attractive brothers. Nick, the youngest at 16, was just photographed lunching with his ex Miley Cyrus. Flat-ironed Joe, 19, already has cut a swath through young Hollywood, dumping Taylor Swift for Camilla Belle. Even paparazzi magnet John Mayer is doing his part, romancing Scheana Marie, who plays a fantasy pizza delivery girl on the May 16 episode. Then there’s the “Jonas Brothers World Tour,” which kicks off in June.

All “JONAS” really has to do is be better than the hammy “Hannah Montana” — and it is. But just barely.

The title is in all caps because it was conceived as a spy show, with the letters standing for Junior Operatives Networking as Spies. But it ended up being about teen superstars who try to live a normal life at school. (Stop me if this sounds familiar.)

Producers have name-dropped “A Hard Day’s Night” and HBO’s whimsical “Flight of the Conchords.” But let’s be honest: The high-water mark for this sort of project is “The Monkees.” Let me break it down for you:

• Nick = dreamy Davy Jones.

• Joe = goofy Micky Dolenz.

• Kevin = quirky Michael Nesmith.

The “Bonus Jonas,” little brother Frankie, is set to guest star on several episodes. Maybe he’ll shape up to be Peter Tork-like.

On the episode I screened, Nick was the weak link — odd, considering he’s got Broadway experience. He underplays his part, which is a mistake when you’re in competition with gimmicky sound effects. Nick told People magazine, “Kevin is not afraid to go over the top to get a laugh, and I am.” So at least he is aware of the problem. But if he’s hoping to emerge from this Faustian bargain with Disney with his dignity intact, he is in for profound disappointment.

The boys josh with each other, flirt with girls, slide down fireman poles, make dumb jokes and talk to the camera. Occasionally their rabid fans chase them and try to tear their clothes off. Occasionally the boys break into song. The amateur acting is endearing until they play a scene opposite someone with real comedic timing — like John Ducey, who plays their dad. He puts Billy Ray Cyrus’ plodding one-liners on “Hannah” to shame.

Joe, who wanted to be a comedian before he was a singer, has more fun, and Kevin, 21, is perfectly silly in the show. Kevin can be overshadowed by his hottie brothers and their sugar-buzz love lives, but he emerges as the leader on “JONAS” — and even dares to reveal a hint of chest hair.

With time, the brothers will probably loosen up. For now, it’s slightly more amusing to watch for the creative variations on private school uniforms. If the Jonases’ plaid messenger bags start a trend, you’ll know the show is a hit.

If you don’t know who she is yet, that’s definitely about to change.

Chelsea Staub is one of the leads in the new Jonas Brothers TV show, JONAS, in which she plays Stella Malone, their best girl friend! As a friend of Joe, Kevin, and Nick since childhood, she attends high school with them and also designs the clothes for their super-popular band.

Celebuzz sat down at Radio Disney to talk to the beautiful, 20-year-old Arizona native about the show, which premieres on the Disney channel on Saturday. Of course, we wanted to know all about her time spent with the Jonas Brothers.

She said she loves how her character gets “the best of both worlds,” and that she gets to “bring them back down to earth” on the show, since she’s their liaison between life as normal high schoolers and rock stars. She auditioned for the part two whole years ago, when the brothers’ fame was nowhere near what is it today, and they filmed the show over a 6-month-period, without an audience, so it was very similar to a movie.

As for the brother’s characters on JONAS? They play exaggerated versions of their separate personalities, and a major part of it is making fun of themselves! Nick, as the serious one (”a 30-year-old in a 16-year-old-body”), Joe, as the clown, and Kevin, who goes all out on everything!

They also LOVE their pranks. Besides Kevin making her laugh all the time, Joe once took all of her furniture out of her dressing room and almost convinced her that she had been fired! She remarked that “you’ve got to be a brilliant prankster” to compete with the three of them.

Other juicy bits:

* On her own personal style: “It changes from day to day, I’d call it ‘bohemian chic.’ I like earthtones, woods, greens.”
* On which brother she’s closest to: “I met all three at the same time,” but, “its really easy to talk to Joe, since he’s around my age.”
* On what she’s doing for the premiere: Watching it at her L.A. apartment with her dad, grandma, and mom, which she calls “Team Staub.”
* On her biggest splurge: A HUGE Betsey Johnson purse. When she finally unwrapped it at home, she realized she had accidentally bought a diaper bag!!
* Who she’s dying to work with: Goldie Hawn.
* Her celebrity crush: “It changes daily between Justin Timberlake and Wolverine actor Taylor Kitsch.”

Writing a review about the Jonas Brothers’ latest project is about like rating a Mafia-owned restaurant. If you don’t tell the mob what they want to hear, hire a bodyguard — or take karate.

Fortunately for me, I won’t have to live in fear that thousands of screaming tween girls — all of them rabid Jonas Brothers fans — will come knocking at the newspaper’s doors, break down the glass and demand a retraction.

I don’t have that fear, because the superstars’ new show, a Disney Channel sitcom simply titled “Jonas,” is not that bad. While the writing is definitely above mediocre, the plot is contrived (as I expected it to be) and the acting is a little questionable, but the music is what makes this series watchable for parents and a must-see for Jonas Brothers fans.

And that’s coming from someone who had to take notes on identifying the three brothers, like they were indistinguishable triplets. But each has something that stands out, at least in their new comedy series:

— Nick sings stands out on the series’ theme song, “Live to Party,” and writes (and performs) an infectious acoustic tune called “Give Love a Try.” His character’s a bit naïve and he falls in love quickly, then falls into despair when it doesn’t work out. He makes reference to his being labeled the “serious one” in fan magazines, and the resident school sort-of stalker, Macy Misa (Nicole Anderson, “Hannah Montana”), points out his “intensity.”

— Joe is easy for me to remember because he’s the only one with straight hair. Macy says he’s “so cool, just the way he walks.” In the premiere episode, “Wrong Song,” Joe is cast as a meddling brother, along with Kevin.

— Kevin is the most opinionated and talks as much or more than Nick, but he doesn’t hold the same naivete. (He is the older brother, so that’s not surprising.) Macy says he’s “so out there and wild,” and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree.

In “Jonas,” the brothers take on the last name Lucas, and they name their band the Jonas Brothers because they live in a swanky converted New Jersey firehouse on Jonas Street. None of them, save Nick, seems to be acting, but Nick’s efforts could use some improvement. Joe and Kevin just seem to act like they would every day, when not recording, touring or visiting with those rabid fans.

The brothers still live with their parents and another brother, but you only see their father, Tom (John Ducey, “Will and Grace”), in the premiere episode. He doesn’t say much and doesn’t seem to serve much of a purpose (other than having a parent or guardian live with a bunch of minors). The brothers’ best friend, Stella Malone (Chelsea Staub, “Minutemen”), is an aspiring designer, and she provides the comedy in this episode, trying to come up with stalker-proof clothing for celebrities.

Meanwhile, Nick pours his heart out to a girl at the private school he attends, writing “Give Love a Try” while his Stooge-like brothers watch in amusement, with a touch of disgust. The rest of the episode, as said before, is contrived, but it’s still entertaining, sprinkled with the band’s songs penned specifically for this series.

So while “Jonas” might not be a work of art and has little, if any, depth, it’s not too bad for parents, and the kids will love it.

Pretty, blonde actress Chelsea Staub played Meredith in the Bratz movie, was in the Disney Channel TV movie “Minutemen” and now, has one of the most coveted roles in tween/teen-aimed TV! She’s playing Stella, the BFF, fashion stylist, dresser to the Jonas Brothers on their new TV show “Jonas”, premiering on the channel May 2nd! We had to find out what the guys are like to work with, if they’ve played any pranks on her and other on-set secrets!

Get the scoop on all things “Jonas” from this friendly insider! Picture pretty Chelsea with her long blonde hair in an upswept do and wearing a gorgeous yellow Phillip Lim dress, black belt and black flats.

TeenTelevision: Chelsea, a lot of girls would love to be in your shoes. What is it about the Jonas guys that most impressed you?

Chelsea: I think the thing that’s amazing is that they’re actually great people and that’s hard to find these days. I think my first impression was ‘wow, these guys are really great’. About a year ago, when we shot the pilot, I was joking around and made some little stars with their names on them and glitter and decorated the dressing rooms and I went over to their house about a year later and they still had them on the doors to their bedrooms and, for me, it’s was like ‘wow, that’s really cool’ and they didn’t know I was coming over so it wasn’t a put on. It wasn’t staged. I think they’re just really good guys.

TeenTelevision: Such a nice story. What was the auditioning process like for you to get this part that I’m sure a lot of girls wanted?

Chelsea: It was long and grueling. It’s actually a funny story. Nicole [Anderson of "Hannah Montana"] and I were both up for [the part of] Stella and we were friends and I got the part and she didn’t. So, as happy as I was to be working with the Jonas Brothers, it was really hard to watch your friend walk away from that role. Now, she’s on the show [Nicole plays Macy, a superfan of the guys]. We shot the pilot and I probably auditioned for maybe five times for the role of Stella with callbacks and more people would be in the room each time. And then, the last audition was with the guys.

TeenTelevision: How was that?

Chelsea: That was cool. I wasn’t as nervous as I probably would be now auditioning because when we originally shot the pilot, it was before the Miley tour and “Burnin’ Up”. It was before even “S.O.S.” hit the airwaves so they weren’t really the phenomenon they are now. So the first pilot was fun. We were all like ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if people like watched it’? [we laugh].

TeenTelevision: Which Jonas has been more funny?

Chelsea: Kevin is hilarious on the show. Nick is the more serious one and Joe is like the crazy prankster.

TeenTelevision: So, other than Jonas music, what kind of music has been played on set?

Chelsea: We have a lot of music on set. With them being artists, we’re constantly listening to music in the make-up room. There’s a lot of Kings of Leon, a lot of music to kind of mellow us out and between scenes they’re always thinking and writing songs. They have some great music. They’re always introducing me to new artists.

TeenTelevision: Are you ready for all the Jonas fans who are going to rush up to you saying ‘OMG, what are they like?’ or “Can you get me into the show?’

Chelsea: Oh yeah. It’s already starting. It’s funny. I have a whole box at home filled with notes and phone numbers for them. So about once a month I’m like ‘here’s your box’. People have given me certificates when they’ve bought a star in the sky named after the guys so it’s pretty incredible.

TeenTelevision: What has your biggest gift to yourself or splurge been since getting the show?

Chelsea: My biggest splurge was going to Paris. That was my gift. I went over Christmas and New Years. I went with my two best girlfriends. I had never been out of the country and this was my first time. We did everything. We were only there for five days but we saw all the museums and the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower and we also went out dancing and walked around the city until midnight. It was great.

TeenTelevision: Did you buy a lot of clothes?

Chelsea: We didn’t shop; three girls in Paris. You should have seen us too. We went home with no bags in our hands when we walked off the plane and our moms were like ‘what?’

TeenTelevision: So you aren’t a shopaholic?

Chelsea: I’m actually not. That’s why it’s so funny to play Stella because fashion and shopping have never really been a passion of mine. I like to just wear what’s comfortable. I like to get dressed up but I’ve never been the girl that’s walking slow-motion through the mall with eight shopping bags.

TeenTelevision: What would people be surprised to know about shooting the Jonas show?

Chelsea: I think people would be surprised at probably how long it takes. A lot of the kids just think ‘oh, that’s so fun. They just go out there and put on a show in a half hour but we shoot twelve hours a day, five days a week! I’m there from six in the morning to six at night so it’s a grueling process.

TeenTelevision: Do you get input into the episodes?

Chelsea: There are so many storylines we want to do. Too many to fit into 21 episodes. I know we were backstage today and something funny happened and we were all like ‘you’ve got to write this in!. I was really nervous and the guys are like ‘you’ve got to write a scene’ because I was shivering and was like ‘I’m cold but I’m sweating. It doesn’t make any sense’. They were like ‘you’ve got to write a scene where Stella has a panic attack before a concert’.

TeenTelevision: Who would you like to guest star on the show?

Chelsea: I’d love to have Goldie Hawn come on as my mom. I have no mom on the show yet, so I’m hoping.

TeenTelevision: Any funny pranks played on you by the Jonases yet?

Chelsea: There have been plenty of them. The funniest so far is I thought I was fired! The boys cleared all my furniture out [of my dressing room]. They had to put Joe in a cheerleader lift so he could unscrew my lightblubs. I walked in and it’s empty and dark and there’s a note saying to ‘please see our producers!

TeenTelevision: I’d wanna kill them!

Chelsea: It was funny but scary.

TeenTelevision: Are you gonna get them back with your own prank?

Chelsea: We have one in the works; me and Nicole and pretty much everyone on the crew because they saw me walk onto set saying ‘you guys. I think I’m fired’. So people are coming up to me every day with ‘what about this idea?’

TeenTelevision: Do you all have any love interests on the show?

Chelsea: There are guest star love interests that come in and out every couple of episodes but Stella has grown up with these boys and they’ve known each other for fifteen years and now that they are teenagers, she finds herself conflicted that she’s starting to become attracted to one of them. I can’t say which one.

TeenTelevision: Are the guys going to perform songs we know or new stuff on the show?

Chelsea: It’s all original songs. You’re not gonna hear ‘Burnin’ Up’. Songs they perform will be new ones that the fans haven’t heard. You’ll see them performing but they do it in a music video type way rather than just on stage in a concert.

TeenTelevision: Are you a singer too?

Chelsea: I sang in a movie and I’ll sing for the character but I haven’t approached the idea of recording an album.

TeenTelevision: What nice thing have the guys done for you?

Chelsea: Nick makes awesome Nutella sandwiches and whenever he makes one, he makes an extra for me. We’ll look at each other on set and Nick will go ‘do you know what time it is?’ and we’ll just walk over to the craft services (food) table without even saying anything and start making the sandwiches.

TeenTelevision: Is there another Disney show you would like to be on?

Chelsea: Probably “Hannah Montana”. I love Miley and that would be fun.

TeenTelevision: What are you driving?

Chelsea: Probably, the first car I get will be a hybrid. You know I’m 20 and I’m still driving my dad’s hand-me-down car, a Mitzubishi.

TeenTelevision: What was a memorable romantic date for you?

Chelsea: I know one date we went up on the roof of the Barnes and Noble at The Grove and that was cool to be able to look down at everyone below and have our own little spot.

TeenTelevision: How do you let a guy know that you like him?

Chelsea: I’ve always just waited to him to make the first move. I’ve never been able to be like ‘Hey, let’s start hangin’ out’. Obviously I try to be as approachable as possible.

TeenTelevision: What is the craziest rumor you’ve heard about yourself?

Chelsea: They always say I’m dating one of the boys but nothing too crazy yet.

TeenTelevision: What is the best advice you have ever gotten?

Chelsea: Someone just told me one time ‘you’ve got to just live to the point of tears’ which I thought was great. Whether you’re upset or laughing so hard that you’re crying, I’ve always loved that. Just get it done. I think it was my mom that found it one day when I was upset. ‘you’ve just got to live to the point of tears’ and I was like ‘all right! I like that’.

TeenTelevision: Do you have a cause or charity that you support?

Chelsea: I went to the Carousel of Hope which raises money for diabetes and that was cool to be a part of now, knowing Nick; wanting to give back when it directly effects someone that I care about.

REASON TO WATCH The boys! The band! The series!

WHAT IT’S ABOUT Kevin, Joe and Nick Lucas (Kevin, Joe and Nick You-Can-Guess-Who) are bros and members of a world-famous rock band by night, but by day, just regular teen guys with regular teen-guy problems (girls).

For instance, in Saturday’s opener, “Wrong Song,” Nick is crushing on Penny (Bridgit Mendler), but can’t be certain whether the feeling is mutual. Meanwhile, Joe and Kevin give him grief over his latest puppy- love infatuation. At school, the Horace Mantis Academy, they have pals like Stella Malone (Chelsea Staub), who will remind some viewers of Ashley Tisdale’s Maddie Fitzpatrick from “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.” Brash, opinionated and animated, Stella is their reality check and comic foil. Dad and band manager is Tom (John Ducey).

By the way, the youngest Jonas, Frankie, is expected to turn up at some point, but was a no-show in the pilot.

BOTTOM LINE The Jonas Brothers may be able to sell millions of records, write and perform catchy songs, perform at the Grammys, be friends with Demi Lovato and - for all I know - do a thousand other things really, really well. But here is something they cannot do really well: Act.

Oh sure, vindictive critics will say they’ve seen cinder blocks with better technique, but I’ll just say that it’s a good thing they’ve got that other gig. Oh sure, “Jonas” will be a hit, and (oh sure) it’s harmless and sweet natured, and the guys are perfectly likable. Also, musicians on sitcoms are as old (”The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” “The Monkees”) and new (”The Naked Brothers Band,” “Hannah Montana”) as the medium itself. None have been penalized by fans for skip- ping their Stella Adler classes.

Over time, the bros may even learn how to graduate from “wooden.” Meanwhile, enjoy the songs - there’s a new one in the premiere, and Disney promises all the tunes will be original for the series.

Years of work and a cross-country move are paying off for one former St. Marys resident.

Nicole Anderson, 17, just finished filming the first season of a new Disney Channel series, “JONAS,” starring the popular band Jonas Brothers. On the show, Anderson plays Macy Misa, the band’s No. 1 fan.

“Finally, all my hard work has paid off,” Anderson said. “I definitely wanted to be on a show.”

Anderson and her parents, Kevin and Anami Anderson, moved to St. Marys when Nicole was 6 years old. Her father was stationed on the USS Tennessee at the time, and Nicole and her siblings, Kenneth and Nadine, attended Camden County schools.

Nicole served as vice president of the Junior Beta Club and secretary of the student council at St. Marys Middle School. At 13, she won a scholarship to modeling school in Atlanta.

She and her mother left St. Marys for Hollywood in February 2004, and Anderson began auditioning for acting roles. Five years later, her film credits include appearances on Disney Channel shows “Hannah Montana,” “iCarly,” “Zoey 101,” and “Unfabulous,” as well as the ABC Family show “Princess — A Modern Day Fairytale.”

Anderson’s new series, “JONAS,” is based on three brothers who live normal lives by day but play in a rock band at night. According to the Disney Channel Web site, Anderson’s character is described as a self-proclaimed “Super Biggest JONAS Fan” who is incredibly agile when playing sports but an absolute klutz elsewhere.

Anderson said that she enjoys developing a character and exploring its personality.

“I love acting so much,” she said. “It’s very cathartic for me. I hope to book more jobs and develop more characters.”

Anderson is still making the adjustment from small-town life in St. Marys to big-city living in Los Angeles. She said she misses the annual Fourth of July festival and the laid-back feel of Camden County.

“[In St. Marys] you get to run around with friends and don’t have to worry about getting lost in downtown L.A.,” she said with a laugh.

Still, it appears that Anderson’s hard work and move to the West Coast have paid off. “JONAS” is set to premier at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 2 on the Disney Channel. For more information about the show, visit www.tv.disney.go.com.

The Jonas Brothers star admits he was bitten by the acting bug early on, as a kid on the Disney Channel, and loved making the band’s 2008 movie Camp Rock. Jonas is keen to expand his acting repertoire, and wants a career in the mold of Johnny Depp.

The 19-year-old tells Seventeen magazine, “I would love to do more acting, maybe movies - that would be really cool. I think Johnny Depp’s work is really great - he always incorporates music into what he does.”

The ambitious star also has literary aspirations, adding, “(I’ll) maybe write a book one day, because I love to read.”

Hey everyone. I thought I would check in from my vacation, we were able to take a few days and relax before heading out on our world tour. Earlier in the month we put the finishing touches on our new CD! I am very proud of the work my brothers & I created. I can’t wait for you to hear it.

A couple weeks ago we did a show at the Atlantis in the Bahamas. We go back there for another performance in early May as well. My family just loves it there. In Addition to going back to the Bahamas, the beginning of May has some great things scheduled. May 1st, be sure to check out my appearance on the TV show “The Doctors”. It is a great segment about diabetes. Then on May 2nd our TV series JONAS debuts on the Disney Channel! It was a lot of fun filming that so we hope that you enjoy it. The rest of May I will be rehearsing for the upcoming world tour and then the first stop of the tour is in South America. We are going to some places that we have never seen before so we are really looking forward to it.

Newsday (MCT) - The Jonas Brothers get their own Disney Channel musical-comedy series this week _ think of “Jonas” (8 p.m. EDT Saturday) as kind of a Monkees for the 21st century, except we think Nick, Joe and Kevin play their own instruments. While ruminating on the talents of the boys, we began thinking about other brotherly trios we’ve seen on the tube over the years. Take these five:

The Hudson Brothers (”The Hudson Brothers Show,” 1974) _ Singers Bill, Brett and Mark starred in their own short-lived summer variety series. But Bill is probably better known for his short marriage to Goldie Hawn, which produced Kate and Oliver.

The Brady Brothers (”The Brady Bunch,” 1969-74) _ Bobby, Peter and Greg _ all of them groovy, red-blooded and all-American. And, after several seasons, all sported perms, just like their dad.

The Douglas Brothers (”My Three Sons,” 1960-1972) _ Mike (Tim Considine), Robbie (Don Grady) and Chip (Stanley Livingston) lived with their widowed dad (Fred MacMurray) and grandfather (William Frawley), later replaced with their grandfather’s brother (William Demarest). The boys were also red-blooded and all-American, but not as groovy as the Brady sibs.

The Partridge Brothers (”The Partridge Family,” 1970-74) _ More musical bros: Keith (David Cassidy), Danny (Danny Bonaduce) and Christopher (Jeremy Gelbwaks, then Brian Forster) sang with their two sisters and mom in a band modeled after the Cowsills.

The “Newhart” Brothers (”Newhart,” 1982-90) _ Not sure we ever learned their last name, but this trio of Vermont rustics _ Larry (William Sanderson), Darryl (Tony Papenfuss) and Darryl (John Voldstad) _ were certainly the world’s worst handymen.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Pop music stars The Jonas Brothers — Kevin, Joe and Nick — are about to become TV stars.

Not that TV is new territory for them. Disney Channel is largely responsible for their success — through music videos and an appearance in last summer’s “Camp Rock” — so it makes sense that the cable network will be the home of their first weekly TV series, “JONAS” (8 p.m. Saturday).

In the program, the brothers play a fictional fraternal rock band just trying to live normal lives despite their fame. Their TV characters have the same first names, but their last name is Lucas. Executive producer Michael Curtis said the band is called JONAS because in the show the boys live on Jonas Street

“We’ve tried to create a fusion of a sitcom and a music video and use original Jonas Brothers songs as the foundation to glue it together,” said Gary Marsh, entertainment president of Disney Channels Worldwide.

At the Television Critics Association winter press tour in January, Marsh described “JONAS” as a cross between “The Monkees” and “Flight of the Conchords;” producers compared the show to The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night.”

During one rainy beach trip, the brothers watched episodes of “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family,” so they had some idea of what to expect from “JONAS.”

“I think for us, we were excited to incorporate our music into this process,” Kevin Jonas said. “It adds a whole other element for us. That’s where our passion is in our hearts.”

The littlest “bonus Jonas,” Frankie, will also appear along with their real-life head of security, Big Rob Feggans, who plays a similar role in the fictional universe of “JONAS.”

The show’s original concept had the brothers playing spies.

“Their cover was blown by Dick Cheney,” executive producer Curtis joked. “The spy concept was very big and very ambitious and it started to not feel quite right. As the band got bigger and bigger, doing a show that captured more of their real lives and trying to turn that into a more grounded, real version of what they might be doing became more interesting to do and more fun to do.”

During the Disney Channel press conference in January, Nick was the quickest to answer questions on behalf of the brothers. He also said he’s had the most difficult time transitioning to acting.

“I’m kind of a perfectionist. I’m very hard on myself when it comes to the acting,” Nick said, adding that it’s been difficult to translate his own personality to the TV character that’s loosely based on him. “In real life I have a very dry sense of humor and sometimes I can’t master that on camera. I’m still learning.”

As for how they keep grounded, the brothers said they could go wild and trash their guitars on stage but then “it would be on YouTube,” Joe said.

The Internet is clearly on their minds when they were asked about rumors that surface, like the notion that one of the brothers might go solo.

“I don’t think so,” Joe said, looking at his brothers, “unless one of you guys wants to lay it out here.”

“Rumors are always out there,” Kevin said. “I just joined a wrestling club in Asia is a new one.”

“Are you serious?” Joe joked. “That’s just awesome.”

“You just roll with it,” Kevin said. “You know who you are and what’s true and you just laugh about it.”

“Sometimes comedians will make jokes about you at an awards show,” Joe said, referring to Russell Brand at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, “and you have to laugh it off because that’s their job. It’s kind of flattering. It’s like, wow, they used me as their prop.”
